Meet the First Female Director of First IIT Outside India; Preeti Aghalayam

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Zanzibar campus, which is slated to become the prestigious institution’s first offshore campus, will also be the first IIT campus to be overseen by a woman director. Preeti Aghalayam has been named as the director-in-charge of the IIT Zanzibar campus, with the first Academic Session beginning in October.

Preeti Aghalayam graduated from IIT Madras with a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering. She is a Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department at IIT Madras, where she has worked since 2010. The Zanzibar campus of IIT Madras will be the first IIT outside of India.

The First Female Director of IIT Zanzibar, Preeti Aghalayam says, “I am an alumnus of IIT Madras, and doing something of this magnitude for the institute and for the country is such a big honor. Every time we visited Zanzibar as part of the IIT Madras contingent, we noticed that the representation of women on their side is quite significant. So, it was important that we do this mindfully.”

“Aghalayam is the first woman to be an IIT director. We will see many more encouraging things. We are following sustainable development goals and one of the important goals suggests that we need to bring in gender balance,” IIT Madras director V Kamakoti said at a press conference.

MoU signed between India and Tanzania:

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed between India and Tanzania, allowing IIT Madras to open its first international campus in Tanzania’s Zanzibar. The institute offers two full-time academic programs and applications for admission are now being accepted.

Meet the First Female Director of IIT Zanzibar

Aghalayam graduated with a BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras in 1995. She then went on to complete her Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2000. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT, Cambridge, and afterward as a faculty member at IIT Bombay after completing her Doctorate.
Aghalayam has been with IIT Madras since 2010, where she is currently a Professor in the Chemical Engineering department. She was just named one of the Principal Scientific Advisor’s office’s 75 Women in STEM.

The permanent campus would be extended across 200 acres on Zanzibar Island, with IIT Madras experts developing the Master plan. The admissions process for the first Academic Year 2023-24 has already begun, with classes set to begin in October 2023. During the early days of this institution, faculty will be deputed from IIT Madras or recruited from India.

Researchers at IIT Guwahati create an AI model to foresee knee osteoarthritis using X-ray scans

0

[ad_1]

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have created the learning-based framework ‘OsteoHRNet’ to evaluate the severity of knee osteoarthritis (OA) using X-ray images. Under the collaborative supervision of Arijit Sur and Palash Ghosh of the institute’s computer science and engineering, and mathematics departments, respectively, Rohit Kumar Jain, an MTech (data science) graduate, built the AI-based model. Prasen Kumar Sharma and Sibaji Gaj, who were both Sur’s PhD students, are also members of the study team. Medical professionals can utilise the model remotely to diagnose the condition more precisely.

Researchers at IIT Guwahati create an AI model

Statement from IIT Guwahati

According to a statement from IIT Guwahati, knee osteoarthritis has a prevalence of 28% in the nation and is the most prevalent musculoskeletal illness worldwide. An early diagnosis is crucial for pain management and behavioural changes because there is no known treatment for knee OA other than complete joint replacement at an advanced stage, it noted.

The statement stated that X-ray imaging is very effective and more economically practical for routine diagnosis. It claimed that MRI and CT scans give a 3D view of the knee joints for effective diagnosis of knee OA but that their availability is restricted and expensive.

According to Ghosh, “Compared to other techniques, our model can pinpoint the area, which is medically most important to decide the severity level of knee OA thus helping medical practitioners to accurately detect the disease at an early stage.”

AI-based model

An effective deep convolutional neural network (CNN), or method from image recognition, is used in the AI-based model. According to the Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) grading system accepted by the World Health Organisation, this model forecasts the severity of knee OA. To capture the multiscale properties of knee X-rays, it is based on one of the newest deep models, the high-resolution network (HRNet).

The proposed approach, however straightforward, might serve as a useful place to start for studying less expensive radiographic modalities like X-rays, according to Sur. At the moment, our research is concentrating on how effectively deep learning-based models can be created so that we can operate with cheap and easily accessible modalities like very low-resolution radiographic pictures or even photos taken from radiographic plates by a smartphone. The team is still working on adapting these models so that they may be used in devices with limited resources.

IIM Sambalpur welcomes its largest MBA batch yet, with 60% female students

0

[ad_1]

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur has announced the launch of its 9th MBA class 2023-25, the institute’s largest batch to date. The batch size was increased by the institute from 300 to 320 this year. The new batch saw a rapid increase in female participation, with 60% of female students (197 seats) registering their seats in the programme out of 329 students, with inclusion being one of the major values of IIM Sambalpur. 40% (132 seats) of the remaining seats were taken by male students.

Distinguished dignitaries, including Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand, President of Vedanta Ltd., and Swati Agarwal, Partner at Deloitte, graced the opening ceremony and gave motivational speeches to the students in attendance.

They shared their experience and wisdom with the entering class in a very open and knowledgeable manner, guiding them on their future academic adventures and outlining what they would involve. All dignitaries in attendance received a vote of appreciation from Professor Shivani Sharma.

IIM Sambalpur welcomes its largest MBA batch yet

The three basic Ideals- Creativity, Integrity, and Inclusivity

The largest batch in the history of the institution, with such a diverse mix of genders, was welcomed by Professor Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director of IIM Sambalpur, who shared his thoughts. “The three basic ideals of creativity, integrity, and inclusivity, which are based on the teachings of the Hindu deities Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, are what we emphasise at IIM Sambalpur.

The IIM Sambalpur logo’s three lines show the three Is as a well-known Sambalpuri handloom pattern. If these three fundamental principles are prioritised, Indian B-schools could rise to the top of the world. In the future, I think that these ideals will make a difference in how the new group of students learns. In the future, I hope that the students’ transforming educational experience will have a greater social influence.”

Motivation By Dignitaries

Deloitte partner Swati Agrawal discussed the management concept of IPL, which she defined as Impact, Purpose, and Leadership. “Impact represents the contribution you give to society; purpose represents your inner motivation; and leadership, which is about having a clear vision, showing empathy for others, and motivating others.

Failures and friendships are two Fs that are equally significant. Secondarily, students will need to learn how to maintain friendships after failing. Create as many relationships as you can. They will serve as your sources of support in the future. Be genuine.” she said.

President of Vedanta Ltd. Tapan Kumar Chand discussed the value of moral leadership. He talked to students about his work experiences and the value of moral leadership in a variety

of settings. He emphasised the importance of making focused efforts in order to achieve outstanding achievements.
