The Tripura School Education Department launched a free ‘School boat’ service to transport disadvantaged pupils living on the islands of Dumbur Lake in the Gumati district to school. Poor children who live on the islands of Dumbur Lake frequently struggle to get to school because they cannot afford the boat travel price. During the monsoon, it is nearly impossible for pupils to go to school via water bodies.
Considering their plight, the school education department launched a school boat’ on Saturday to transport pupils from their homes to school for free. Dumbur Lake, which is encircled by 48 islands, is 120 kilometers from the state capital, and fishing is the primary source of income for the people who live on these islands.
According to PTI, Chandni Chandran, State Project Director (SPD) of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. “Dakmura Gumati Senior Basic School has 100 students but attendance is low due to communication bottleneck. Around 50 students come from various islands of Dumbur Lake and they often fail to attend school as they can’t afford to bear the traveling expense as the boat is the only means of communication,”.
