How did Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam contribute to India’s Chandrayaan programme?

0

[ad_1]

Nearly 20 years ago, when plans for sending a mission to the Moon were in their early stages within the Indian scientific community, APJ Abdul Kalam stated that if the country was able to achieve it, it would be nothing short of electrification.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam's contribution in Chandrayaan

After learning that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is considering a Moon mission, Kalam had stated in 2003 that Chandrayaan’s investigation of the Moon “will electrify the entire country, particularly young scientists and children.” He asserted that India’s Moon mission is “just a start towards future planetary explorations” and expressed confidence in this assertion.

Dr. Kalam’s Suggestions of Chandrayaan-1

After viewing the last-minute preparations for PSLV-C5, which was getting ready to launch RESOURCESAT-1, India’s most sophisticated remote sensing satellite at the time, Kalam, the country’s president at the time, spoke to experts from ISRO. Call it coincidence or fate, but a year later, when an ISRO team member met with Kalam to brief him on their lunar mission, which sought to orbit the Moon from a distance of 100 kilometres, Kalam proposed why not land there! Chandrayaan-1, India’s first Moon mission, was the topic of this discussion.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam's contribution in Chandrayaan

“President Kalam asked us why not land on it [Moon] when your spacecraft is going that far all the way,” M Annadurai, the project director of Chandrayaan-1 and later ISRO’s satellite director, stated in 2015 during a conference held in Kalam’s memory. After visiting Kalam, Annadurai’s team went back to its base and came up with a way to implement his plan for a Moon impact probe (MIP). In his 2015 speech, Annadurai recalled that President Kalam was “delighted” to learn that Indian scientists would be landing an object on the Moon’s surface.

Successful Accomplishment of Chandrayaan-1

Later, when the MIP on Chandrayaan-1 landed on the Moon, instruments attached to it identified and confirmed the existence of water on the Moon’s surface. Nasa, which had also used Chandrayaan-1 to send an instrument to the Moon, confirmed the discovery. In August 2018, Nasa stated that the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) instrument was “uniquely equipped to confirm the presence of solid ice on the Moon.”

Dr. Kalam’s Suggestion on Chandrayaan-2

After Chandrayaan-1, ISRO had its sights set on launching a second Moon mission. However, this time it would be more impressive, so the objective was to advance and soft land a rover on the moon-a feat only three countries have so far accomplished. The mission was authorised by the government on September 18, 2008, and was given the designation Chandrayaan-2. It seeked to continue the exploration of the Moon’s surface begun by Chandrayaan-1.

In 2009, Kalam suggested that NASA and ISRO deploy a surface robotic penetrator in Chandrayaan-2 while speaking to a group of scientists at the California Institute of Technology in the US. This, according to Kalam, would aid in the investigation of whether there is water on the Moon.

During a meeting with students in Mumbai in 2009, Kalam said, “I suggested to both ISRO and NASA to work on future mission of Chandrayaan-2 using Moon surface robotic penetrator during my recent visit to California Institute of Technology in the US where Nasa scientists presented the findings of Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) to Indian scientists.”

Launch of Chandrayaan-2

Although Kalam wasn’t there to witness this grateful event on July 22 2019, ISRO launched Chandrayaan-2 which was perhaps its most sophisticated mission so far. Chandrayaan-2 was to make India the first country to soft land a rover on Moon’s south polar region, also known as the dark side but the mission failed when the organisation lost contact with the lander 400 metres before the landing. Even though as an official statement the mission was 98% successful.

Dr. Kalam’s Vision of Space Centre on Moon

Kalam always emphasised the importance of India’s Moon mission and suggested that Indian scientists investigate studying frozen helium (a superb source of renewable energy) on the Moon. He believed that the Moon could someday be envisioned as a hub for the space industry.

“The Moon is crucial because it could end up serving as a space station halfway between Earth and Mars. The Moon can be imagined as a space industrial centre, especially with all of its frozen helium,” Kalam remarked in a 2006 lecture titled “Vision for Space Application.”

In the future, when the world turns to producing energy through fusion, Kalam stressed the importance of exploring the presence of helium on the moon as one of the most valuable resources. “This energy produced using helium in the Moon can also energise the vehicles for transporting materials from the Moon to man’s future habitats in Mars and to his natural abode, the Earth,” Kalam had stated.

“I envision a scene in the year 2021, when I will be 90 years old, visiting the Sriharikota spaceport to board the space plane so that I can reach another planet and safely return as one of the passengers,” he stated perhaps on a lighter but visionary note to close his address.

Upcoming Chandrayaan-3 Mission

If Kalam were still alive, he would have undoubtedly clenched his fist in the air in celebration on Friday July 14, 2023, when Chandrayaan-3 is scheduled to be rocketed into orbit, just as he did in 2008 when India’s first Moon mission, Chandrayaan-1, was launched successfully.

Is it possible to travel to another planet in space? This will take some time-possibly decades. But you have to dream before your dreams can come true, Kalam reminded students in India and overseas, with his trademark radiant smile and twinkle in his eyes. He would assert that one must constantly have dreams.

Popular and Inspiring Women Personalities in ISRO

0

[ad_1]

Women can no longer be restrained or hindered from accomplishing whatever they desire. They have emerged out from underneath their shells, spread their feathers, and soared across the skies, conquering awards, gaining honour, excelling outside limitations, bringing India pride, and inspiring so many of us to know that there is no barrier we cannot overcome.

Inspiring Women Personalities in ISRO

Overcoming the stereotypes, India’s self-made women constantly remind us that any field of study is not gender dependent. We honour the achievements of women in science. Women in sciences have progressed from remaining a minority to acquiring the most prominent positions in fields formerly considered to be unattainable. Women scientists have made history in a variety of ways, from earning Nobel Prizes to leading NASA.

With the Chandrayaan-1, Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), and ASTROSAT missions, India has developed and propelled 82 satellites into orbit, exploring the Moon, Mars, and the stars. However, these missions are backed by an outstanding crew of researchers and engineers, including an array of pioneering women.

Following UIS (UNESCO Institute for Statistics) data, women make up less than 30% of the world’s researchers, and while this number is rising, the mission’s contribution to encouraging and motivating young women to accomplish for the skies and pursue their ambitions.

Here is a list of women whose scientific contributions have widened science’s boundaries.

Popular Women Personalities in ISRO

Minal Sampath

Minal Sampath, a systems engineer on India’s Mars mission, worked flat out in a windowless room for two years, often for 18 hours a day, to prepare for the country’s most significant space project to date. Mrs Sampath and all the researchers with her had abstained from taking any leaves for nearly two years before the launch of India’s Mangalyan into space.

Anuradha T.K

Anuradha T.K. was the first woman to be appointed as an ISRO satellite project director. She completed her engineering degree in electronics from Bangalore’s University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering. She specialises in communication satellites and is one of ISRO’s most senior female scientists. She received various accolades, including the Space Gold Medal, Suman Award, ASI-ISRO Merit Award, and ISRO team Award.

Tessy Thomas

Tessy Thomas, also known as the ‘Missile Woman’ of India, is the Director General of Aeronautical Systems and the former Project Director for the Agni-IV missile at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). She is India’s first female scientist to lead a missile project.

Inspiring Women Personalities in ISRO

Moumita Dutta

She was an important member of the mission’s (MOM) team. Moumita Dutta was born in Kolkata and reared there. She worked on the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM). She began working at the space technology centre in Ahmedabad in 2006. Since then, she has been involved in several significant initiatives, including HySAT, Resources at, Oceans, Chandrayan 1, and the Mars Orbiter Mission. ISRO Team of Excellence Award was given to Moumita Dutta for her exceptional contribution to the Mangalyaan programme.

VR Lalithambika

VR Lalithambika, a control systems engineer, is one of India’s most senior scientists. Lalithambika, an expert in Advanced Launcher Technologies, was instrumental in the development of the country’s rocket programme; she has been with ISRO for over 30 years.

Nandini Harinath

Nandini Harinath is a well-known female scientist at ISRO. She works at the ISRO Satellite Centre in Bengaluru as a rocket scientist. Notably, she is the Project Manager (Mission Design) and Deputy Operations Director for Mangalyaan, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission. Nandini has been with ISRO for almost two decades and assisted on 14 missions for the Indian space agency.

Ritu Karidhal

Ritu Karidhal was honoured for her contribution as Mission Director of India’s most ambitious lunar project, Chandrayaan-2. She was in charge of designing and executing the craft’s onward autonomy system, which autonomously operated the satellite’s systems in space and responded properly to faults. Ritu dubbed the ‘Rocket Woman of India,’ joined ISRO in 2007 and was also the Deputy Operations Director for India’s Mars Orbiter mission, Mangalyaan.

Lt Commander Disha Amrith; the Female Officer, led the Naval Contingent in the Republic Day Parade

0

[ad_1]

Lt Commander Disha Amrith, a female naval air operations official assigned to a key base, led the Indian Navy’s Republic Day contingent of 144 young sailors, and the tableau will depict the ‘Nari Shakti’ in full force. According to Navy officials, three women and five male Agniveers took part in the march at Kartavya Path. Aside from Disha Amrith, another female officer, Sub Lt Valli Meena S, will be one of the navy contingent’s three platoon leaders.

Lt Commander Disha Amrith; Led Republic Day Parade

Disha is the daughter of Amrith Kumar and Leela Amrith, who live in the city’s Tilak Nagar neighbourhood in Boloor. She had always wanted to be a naval officer since she was a child. She did her primary and secondary school at Canara Educational Institution. She joined the NCC while still in high school. Because there was no NCC unit in Canara at the time, she was trained at St Aloysius College.

Disha took part in multiple rounds of Indian Navy eligibility examinations. Despite some setbacks, she did not give up on her goal and dream, and she was hired as a Dornier aircraft air operation officer in the Indian Navy. She is currently serving as a Lieutenant Commander in the Indian Navy in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Disha enlisted in the Indian Navy in 2016. After completing her training, she was assigned to Andaman & Nicobar in 2017. She also flew Dornier planes and participated in some operations.

“Since 2008, I was nurturing this dream of being part of the Republic Day contingent of the Armed forces. It is an amazing opportunity that the Indian Navy has given me (to lead the naval contingent),” she said.

The Mangaluru-born officer joined the Navy in 2016 and was sent to a critical naval base in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands after finishing her training in 2017.

“I am an aviator for Dornier aircraft and have been carrying out sorties in the plane,” she said.

When asked about the difficulties that women encounter in the military, Amrith stated, “I became stronger physically, emotionally, and now I am more self-driven.” The Indian Navy’s famed brass band of 80 musicians, directed by M Antony Raj, will perform the Indian Navy Song ‘Jai Bharti’.

It should be noted that Divya Ajith led the first all-female contingent in the Republic Day parade in 2015. Although women still do not have an equal presence in the military forces, more women have been featured in parades in recent years.
